About this blog

I've been putting my thoughts out onto the Intertubes since about 1992, firstly through BBS boards, then Fidonet echoes, then Usenet groups (notably rec.sport.cricket and aus.sport.rugby-league, the latter of which was established by me in 1995). The two major topics that I dealt with online in those days were, as the title of the newsgroups suggest, cricket and rugby league.

Between 1998 and 2001 I wrote about cricket online for a living (the golden years of Cricinfo, before it lost its corporate memory). I resumed occasional writing on my own website, rickeyre.com, using self-cobbled PHP content management systems during 2002 and 2003. Once that ugly term "blog" got stuck in our brains, I set one up, firstly in Wordpress and since 2006 in Drupal.

The topics that I have covered over the past five or so years have wondered all over the shop - feel free to trawl back through the archives.

From time to time there will be a particular event or series of events that I will focus upon. Cricket, and particularly Test matches involving Australia, is probably my best-read subject area, especially around Ashes time (see 2005 and 2009). Olympic Games are another (see Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008). I also love ripping into election campaigns, federal (Australia), state (New South Wales) and local (Marrickville).

Since about April 2009 I have preferred to post any shorter comments (ie, 140 characters or less) to Twitter.

More information about the issues that I care about can be seen on the Position Statements on these pages, when I get around to writing them!
