Sports news from 1920: Interstate baseball is back
Interstate baseball returned to Sydney on 24 July 1920 for the first time since the Great War as New South Wales played Victoria at Petersham Oval in the first of a three-match series.
The best known names from the two teams are two future international cricketers: Alan Kippax, third base for NSW, and Bill Ponsford, catcher for Victoria. A crowd of about 4000 packed into Petersham Park however the match on a fine Saturday afternoon was a bit of a rout, NSW winning 27 runs to 3.
Newcastle to Hamilton 2009
Knowing that this experience was set to be taken away from us by a cocktail of state governments and property developers, I poked my camera out the window on a train ride from Newcastle to Hamilton late on a Sunday afternoon in January 2009. The Newcastle line was closed on Christmas night 2014 and now terminates and what was previously known as Wickham Station. A light rail line was built to replace the last stages of the old Newcastle line. Has the promised economic boost to the inner city ever happened?
