Rio Day Minus One: Capybaras ate my golf course!
The day before the Olympic opening ceremony, the traditional Day Minus One Men's Soccer Thursday. Meh.
Fiji, a nation whose hopes of a first-ever gold medal rest with the men's rugby sevens team, made their men's soccer debut losing 0-8 to South Korea. Otherwise, as I said, meh. Here's a summary of the day's action.

Sheraton Bowling Club secretary Rick Eyre said they were immensely appreciative to BP South West Pacific (Ltd), Sheraton, and Kundan Singh who all stepped in to assist the minor sport.
"The Fiji bowling squad to the recent world bowls championship received $5000 from the interim government," Eyre said.

Let me just say at this juncture that I have never been to Fiji, never played bowls, never run a sporting club, and never stayed at a Sheraton.

Bananarama republic
Well I thought I'd better use the line if no one else has yet, but it just makes me sad to see what is happening in Fiji yet again.
Frank Bainimarama, third in the list of scoundrels that began with Sitiveni Rabuka and continued, rather bizarrely, with George Speight.
